HALO HVAC case study AHU Refurbishment

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD)

The UK Ministry of Defence is committed to decarbonising and improving its infrastructure to ensure national security, operational effectiveness, and resilience in the face of emerging global challenges. As climate change intensifies, it poses a direct threat to global stability, with increased risks of conflict, natural disasters, and resource scarcity. By reducing its carbon footprint and modernising infrastructure, the MoD aims to lead by example, enhance the sustainability of its operations, and ensure that its forces are equipped to operate effectively in a rapidly changing environment.

This initiative also aligns with broader government goals to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, ensuring that the UK's defence capabilities remain robust and adaptive to future challenges.

HALO HVAC were appointed by one of the UKs most Forward—Thinking Building Services Providers to deliver a solution that included Air Handling Unit Refurbishment, removal of Chillers and Installing Cutting-Edge Air Source Heat Pumps with new controls integration, whilst Interlocking with the MODs Ambitions for Adaptation, Resilience, Sustainability, Net Zero, and Global Leadership.

Precision Decommissioning in a High-Stakes Environment

HALO HVAC successfully decommissioned an outdated, fossil-fuelled chiller on-site, demonstrating our commitment to innovative solutions and environmental responsibility. To safely and efficiently remove the chiller, we deployed the UK's longest-reaching specialised crane, expertly navigating a series of complex obstacles and tight spaces. This operation was conducted with precision, just a stone’s throw away from a fully operational runway, underscoring our ability to execute high-risk projects with minimal disruption to surrounding activities.

Precision Installation and Eco-Friendly Innovation: HALO HVAC’s Expert ASHP Deployment

HALO HVAC collaborated closely with a manufacturer to create a custom air source heat pump designed specifically for the precise heating and cooling needs of a specialised area. This advanced system delivers air at exact temperatures, ensuring optimal conditions for cutting-edge scientific research. Unlike conventional chillers that often have lower efficiency and depend on fossil fuels, the air source heat pump offers a more eco-friendly solution. It utilizes electricity to transfer heat rather than generating it through combustion, resulting in reduced carbon emissions, enhanced energy efficiency, and decreased reliance on fossil fuels.

Demonstrating our technical prowess, HALO HVAC efficiently installed the new AHSP, utilising the UK’s longest-reaching specialized crane. Our team expertly navigated a complex array of obstacles and tight spaces with precision, all while working within an active facility. This successful operation underscores our ability to manage high-risk projects with minimal disruption.

Air Handling Unit Refurbishment with Total System Integration.

HALO HVAC has expertly refurbished the air handling unit (AHU) to significantly extend its lifecycle and boost its efficiency. This comprehensive upgrade involved a thorough overhaul of critical components, resulting in improved performance and energy efficiency. A key enhancement was the remodelling of the heating coil to function for both heating and cooling, allowing for precise temperature control year-round.

In addition, HALO HVAC replaced the outdated chiller system with a state-of-the-art Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP). This modern system offers an energy-efficient, eco-friendly solution by utilising renewable air energy to regulate critical indoor climate. The integration and commissioning of both the refurbished AHU and the new ASHP were meticulously executed to ensure seamless operation.

Total Control.

HALO HVAC engineers revolutionized the building's climate control by seamlessly integrating a sophisticated controls strategy that connects the Air Handling Unit (AHU) and Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) with a user-friendly handheld device. This advanced system allows users to effortlessly adjust temperatures with a simple touch, ensuring both reliability and ease of use. By streamlining control through an intuitive interface, our engineers have enhanced the facility’s operational efficiency, enabling rapid and precise temperature management that adapts to the facilities' needs. This innovative approach not only simplifies temperature adjustments but also optimizes energy consumption and maintains a consistent, comfortable environment throughout the building.

Project Delivered.

Our approach not only enhances reliability and performance but also supports our clients commitment to lead by example, enhance the sustainability of its operations, and ensure that its equipped to operate effectively in a rapidly changing environment.

Clean Room & Labs, Chandlers Ford

13 Air Handling Units serving a critical manufacturing process and science laboratories, all requiring refurbishments, controls and BMS modifications, delivered in 5 days, whilst achieving 26t a year CO2e reduction.

5 Star Hotel, Knightsbridge, London

The belt-driven fans in the hotel's air handling units failed, causing no ventilation in critical areas; urgent reinstatement was essential for to ensure the Hotel was fully operational & compliant.

Kettering General Hospital

Bringing the Air Handling Unit in line with compliances such as HTM 03-01 whilst reclaiming lost heat through new ventilation strategies, enabling energy savings.

Food Manufacturer, Rugby

Ventilation is vital for food production, ensuring air quality and contamination prevention. Upgraded filtration and AHU refurbishment guaranteed compliance, reliability and effectiveness.

Offices. Gracechurch Street, London

With the building owners advertising for new leases a key objective was to ensure the indoor environment is comfortable and healthy. Over time, the existing AHUs became less efficient, leading to higher energy bills and reduced indoor air quality.

5 Star Hotel. Mayfair, London

This luxury hotel operates 24/7 therefore we had to deliver this project with zero disruption. We completed all works in 2 evenings whilst staging the works to allow for ventilation to continue during daytime hours.
